Matt Glenn will serve as Captain of Schooner Harvey Gamage for Proctor Academy’s Winter Ocean Classroom Program

Portland, Maine – Sailing Ships Maine announces the appointment of Matt Glenn as Captain of SSV Harvey Gamage for the duration of an eight-week voyage hosting Proctor Academy’s Winter Ocean Classroom Program.  Captain Matt Glenn first learned to sail through free programs for Boston youth on the Charles River and Boston Harbor. He was introduced to tall ships by a college history program taught at sea aboard the square-rigged ship, HMS Rose. Season’s greetings and a big huzzah to everyone! As we approach the end of the year I wanted to provide you with a quick update on our sailing season and to ask for your help with meeting our annual appeal goal. 2021 turned out to be a banner year for our sailing and camp programs! We had one of our best seasons of public sails with 5,950 passengers nearly eclipsing our all-time record from 2017 of 6,193 passengers. In Memoriam: Richard Bruce Elliot 1924-2021

Update from Rich Clycorne, Sept 2021: Bruce was a generous man who provided funding for schools in the Concord-Hopkinton-Henniker-Weare areas of the state to participate in our Celebrating our Rivers school programs; the funding also included the transportation costs for the schools to and from Portsmouth. Bruce, and his son Bill, visited Portsmouth back in 2011 and were given a tour of the Piscataqua by Molly Bolster (Director Emeritus) as the vessel was being built on the grounds of Strawbery Banke.
