Alexa Hilmer currently acts as the External Relations Coordinator for Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) on Appledore Island in the Isles of Shoals, and has worked in many other capacities for SML over the last 6 years. As an undergraduate at Cornell University, Alexa first visited the Shoals to take a marine biology course at SML. Appledore Island’s culture of research and discovery immediately drew her in and she has been involved with SML ever since. Alexa has always had a passion for the marine environment, having grown up on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. One of her first summer jobs was working aboard whale watch vessels, which is where she fell in love with marine education, research, and outreach.

The Gulf of Maine, as a body of water, is warming faster than 99% of the world’s oceans, and marine science is increasingly important, especially here in New England. This summer, 2016, the Shoals Marine Laboratory is celebrating its 50th Anniversary! Alexa is excited and proud to talk to you today about 50 years the Shoals Marine Laboratory: how SML is fostering the next generation of marine scientists on Appledore Island, while also serving as an important sentinel on the Seacoast to monitor and study dynamic ocean changes.

Tickets for these two-hour sails are a special low price of $18 per person thanks to the support of the New Hampshire Coastal Program and RBC Wealth Management.
