Shane P. Chick, limited edition woodblock prints
Donated by South Berwick artist, Shane P. Chick, limited edition woodblock prints are now available for purchase at $250 each (matted, unframed) with the proceeds supporting the Gundalow Company. This stunning custom-designed print depicts the Piscataqua gundalow anchored in Little Harbor in front of the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
In August 2010, the gundalow anchored on the banks of Royal Governor Wentworth’s historic home and became the inspiration for this print. As a surveyor of the King’s mast pines, it is possible that this scene might have been witnessed as easily in the 1700’s as it is in modern day.
To create each print, one piece of wood is carved, by hand, several times. After each round of carving, one color of ink is layered onto the same piece of paper. Once completed, reduction woodcut prints can never be recreated. A 2006 graduate of University of New Hampshire, Chick is currently creating reduction woodcut prints from his home studio in South Berwick, Maine. As a stay-at-home dad, he works around his 3 year old daughter and their adventures in the community. In addition to creating these reduction woodcut prints, Shane teaches classes through Marshwood Adult Education, The Vault, and Fletcher Farm School for the Arts and Crafts in Vermont. “We are so touched by Shane’s generous gift to the Gundalow Company,” notes Molly Bolster, Executive Director of the Gundalow Company. “Gundalows have long been the inspiration for artists in the Seacoast region and Shane’s woodblock print will be a beautiful addition to anyone’s collection.”
