Gundalow Company
In
1996, ownership of the gundalow was transferred from the Piscataqua
Gundalow Project to Strawbery Banke and the original board of the
founding Piscataqua Gundalow Project was dissolved. The gundalow
moored at Prescott Park and made regular visits to Old York Historical
Society, Sandy Point Discovery Center and other sites along the waterways
of the Piscataqua watershed. At the end of 2001, Strawbery Banke
trustees had determined that their future strategic plan could not
accommodate the continued stewardship of the gundalow. A group of
enthusiastic community members gathered together and incorporated
a new, independent non-profit, the “Gundalow Company” to
honor the original mission of stewardship and education, and to bring
the historic gundalow initiative into the 21st century.
The
new Gundalow Company is committed to a vision of the gundalow as
being the connecting-force and collaborative leader of a shared maritime
heritage of the Piscataqua watershed, encompassing a 120 square mile
area from York in the north, down each riverway and waterbasin that
leads to the Gulf of Maine and the Atlantic: Great Bay, Little Bay,
the Squamscott River, Lamprey River, Oyster River, Bellamy River,
Piscataqua River, to Rye and the Hamptons in the south. The mission
of the Gundalow Company is to promote awareness of the maritime heritage
and the contemporary coastal environment in the Piscataqua Region
using a replica gundalow in collaboration with other nonprofit organizations.
 The
Gundalow Company consists of a small staff, volunteers & a
volunteer board of directors. There are many exciting opportunities
to be involved (indoors & out!): developing education programs,
maintaining the vessel, leading tours of the Gundalow, producing
events & public programs, to name but a few. Contact Molly
Bolster at info@gundalow.org or
