Join us for place–based field trips under sail… on our floating classroom!
Sailing and learning on the gundalow Piscataqua is a transforming experience! Our first three seasons were memorable – with over 5000 scouts, campers, and students of all ages enjoying a unique educational experience on Piscataqua.
They were immersed in hands-on learning during their voyage: setting the sail, steering the vessel, learning to navigate, towing for plankton, exploring human impact and analyzing water quality. Our expanded STEM sails feature additional activities focused on math and engineering.
We invite you to bring your class on a very special field trip – a sail aboard a gundalow on the tidal waters of the Piscataqua Region. This unique educational opportunity is available mornings and afternoons mid-May through October, with reservations made in advance. These program are designed for schools, camps, clubs, or any group with an interest in our watershed.
Our sailing vessel can accommodate up to 27 students. When combined with a shore program we can do up to 2 groups a day for a total of 54 students. Check out our shore programs, or spend part of the day visiting Strawbery Banke.

Celebrating Our Rivers
Our standard school program, Celebrating Our Rivers, is designed for grades 4 through adult. The program sails out of Portsmouth’s Prescott Park with a few sails a year from Adams Point in Great Bay. While on the Piscataqua, students will divide up into groups for customized learning stations including marine science, human impact on the watershed, and sense of place/navigation. Our staff will work with you to customize the trip and ensure your class enjoys a meaningful educational experience. This program includes a 2.5 hour sail.

Combine a sail on the Gundalow with our shore program and make a day of it! This program includes a 2.5 hour sail on the Gundalow and 2 hours of programming onshore.
We offer several shore-based program options including a history walk, a tidepooling scavenger hunt, and our place-based role playing game, Piscataqua People.

Sailing with STEM
Our Sailing with STEM program is specifically for grades 6-12 and is focused on STEM based learning. While our standard program already incorporated STEM learning, our Sailing with STEM program take this learning deeper and incorporates math, engineering and technology along with our hands-on science.
Customize Your Sail
Our talented crew is happy to work with you to customize your sailing program. Whether you are hoping to tie your learning experience into your current curriculum, want to incorporate art or theater, or just want something different, we are happy to work with you.
Homeschool Program on the Gundalow
We now offer several programs each year specifically for homeschoolers. Step aboard the Gundalow and head out on the Piscataqua River for an exciting 2.5 hour sail. While onboard, participants will set the sail, steer the vessel, learn to navigate, tow for plankton, and explore the human impact on our watershed. This program is geared towards students ages 7 and up.
Our spring homeschool programs have sold out, but check back later in the season as we may add additional programs.
Praise for our school sails comes from students, teachers and adult learners, and we invite you to personally experience this opportunity in 2015.
