State of the Piscataqua Watershed

Great Bay pollution

Great Bay pollution

The 2009 State of the Estuaries Report concludes that, despite years of land protection and citizen education, the environmental quality of the Piscataqua watershed is declining. Eleven of 12 critical environmental indicators show negative or cautionary trends. Similar trends in other parts of the country when ignored have incurred major economic and environmental costs.

The Gundalow Company tells a unique story of our maritime heritage through the only historic Piscataqua gundalow, the Captain Edward H. Adams. We link our region’s past with the need to protect it for the future. Unlike any other seacoast environmental organization, we have the ability to inspire individuals to take responsibility and become better stewards of our community. Our message is to appreciate these river systems, and to understand the need for protection and action.

“Based on my experiences over the past three years, I can confidently state that the Gundalow Company has achieved a well-deserved reputation as the premier public outreach and environmental education provider in the Piscataqua region.”
— Ray Konisky, Ph.D, The Nature Conservancy, NH Chapter

A timely strategic planning process in 2008 engaged volunteers and community members in discussions about the health of the Great Bay Estuary and the Piscataqua Watershed, and the role of the Gundalow Company as a platform for educational programs.  Out of those conversations, the mission of the Gundalow Company was revised to reflect a sense of urgency needed to “protect the Piscataqua Region’s maritime heritage and environment through education and action.”
