African American Soldiers and Sailors of NH during the American Revolution with author and historian Glenn Knoblock

The Gundalow Company presents an evening Maritime History at the Portsmouth Library May 2nd at 6:30. One of the most interesting aspects of the American Revolution is the role played by African Americans in the fight for independence. Both free African Americans and those that were enslaved were key in manning state militias and Continental Army units, as well as serving on the high seas in the Navy and on privately armed ships. Indeed, their service to the colonies was crucial in a conflict that lasted nearly seven years. Prohibited from serving in military units and largely considered “undesirable elements,” […]

Introducing the newest Gundalow, ‘Cocheco’

We’re so excited to share with you the hard work of Gundalow volunteer Dane Drasher.  Over the winter Dane has worked to create the most recent Gundalow, ‘the Cocheco.’  This Gundalow is about 5 feet long and built with both function and beauty in mind.  From the tiny details in the cabin to the working brail lines, this gorgeous boat will make its own way around the Piscataqua Region visiting classrooms, libraries, senior centers and so much more.  The boat is truly a work of art and we are completely blown away with the commitment and work of Dane.
