Portland, Maine – Sailing Ships Maine announces the appointment of Matt Glenn as Captain of SSV Harvey Gamage for the duration of an eight-week voyage hosting Proctor Academy’s Winter Ocean Classroom Program.  Captain Matt Glenn first learned to sail through free programs for Boston youth on the Charles River and Boston Harbor. He was introduced to tall ships by a college history program taught at sea aboard the square-rigged ship, HMS Rose. Season’s greetings and a big huzzah to everyone! As we approach the end of the year I wanted to provide you with a quick update on our sailing season and to ask for your help with meeting our annual appeal goal. 2021 turned out to be a banner year for our sailing and camp programs! We had one of our best seasons of public sails with 5,950 passengers nearly eclipsing our all-time record from 2017 of 6,193 passengers. Seafaring was one of the most significant occupations among both enslaved and free Black men between 1740 and 1865. Black sailors sailed on whalers, warships, and privateers. River Classroom Programs

We also offer field trip opportunities. Each spring and fall we offer several afterschool programs and multi-week mini courses. 2021 Camp Registration- Coming February!

Gundalow Company offers a variety of camp experiences to get kids on and around the water.  These programs are run aboard the gundalow Piscataqua, at our land base at Creek Farm owned by the Society for the Protection of NH Forest, and at our other partner organizations.  We offer aftercare from 3:00-5:00 during our full day programs. We also have camp partnership weeks with local organizations and “discovery” or themed weeks- check them out! Registration opens for members February 8th and to the public on February 15th.

 Message From The Director As you can imagine, this has been a year full of trials and challenges.  No one had a crystal ball and could foretell that a worldwide pandemic would cause us to cancel all of our spring school programs, delay the start of our sailing season until July and severely limit our ability to carry out our mission of educating the children, residents, and visitors to the Seacoast area about the maritime heritage and environment of this iconic watershed.  However, our staff and crew are a tough and resourceful lot, and even with the prospect of cancelling […]
