You can make a difference at home and at work.  TEN THINGS YOU CAN DO:

  1. Upgrade sewage treatment facilities in your town (vote for this!)
  2. Limit stormwater discharge (contact town government to improve stormwater engineering.)
  3. Reduce the use of fertilizers (amount and frequency.)
  4. Pump out your septic system! (and make sure it hasn’t failed.)
  5. Pick up and dispose of pet waste (a significant source of nitrogen.)
  6. Limit impervious surfaces (less asphalt, more grass.)
  7. On your lot, create runoff retention ponds and ditches (slow down water runoff.)
  8. Reduce your driving (car exhaust adds nitrogen to the watershed and rivers.)
  9. Eat less meat (reduce your nitrogen footprint.)
  10. Buy local (decrease nitrogen from transportation emissions.)
