You can make a difference at home and at work. TEN THINGS YOU CAN DO:
- Upgrade sewage treatment facilities in your town (vote for this!)
- Limit stormwater discharge (contact town government to improve stormwater engineering.)
- Reduce the use of fertilizers (amount and frequency.)
- Pump out your septic system! (and make sure it hasn’t failed.)
- Pick up and dispose of pet waste (a significant source of nitrogen.)
- Limit impervious surfaces (less asphalt, more grass.)
- On your lot, create runoff retention ponds and ditches (slow down water runoff.)
- Reduce your driving (car exhaust adds nitrogen to the watershed and rivers.)
- Eat less meat (reduce your nitrogen footprint.)
- Buy local (decrease nitrogen from transportation emissions.)
